An Argument in Support of Home Schooling,
Anyone has been
familiar with home schooling. This article describes about different opinion
between home schooling and formal school. It describing home schooling is
clearer than formal school because the position of the author of this article
is pro home schooling, it can be seen from its title, “An Argument in Support of Home Schooling”.
At the first paragraph, the author writes definition of home schooling,
it will be better if there is definition of formal school, so the readers can
understand what home schooling is from comparing both of definition on home
schooling and formal school. From paragraph one I just get that home schooling
is like non-formal school such as course, private learning, etc.
I would
rather state “formal school” than “traditional education” like what the author
stated, traditional education heard too old.
I disagree that home schoolers have many opportunities to meet and
interact with other kids. Where can it be held? Many questions exist in my
mind. One teacher and one student do teaching learning process, how a student
can interact each other while just one student there. As we have known that
learning is not only about subject but also about socialization between a
student and other counterparts. Process of socialization is an important need
for human especially for children.
Home
schooling imposes outside activity to interact with another for example music
classes, field trips, volunteer work, sports, etc. I think it is not enough
because it also can be got from informal school. Informal school is an
education that is got in daily life through experience consciously or
unconsciously throughout life, Coomba
(Abdulhak: 1986). This education takes place in family, work, community and
organization naturally. It means that it is not necessary to hold some event
for this.
Although the government admits
existing home schooling as an alternative education, but the government does
not give a particular regulations for home schooling. It is necessary because
home schoolers or their parents should pay attention to teacher’s quality and curriculum
to get national education goals. Education is teaching learning process not
only for getting knowledge but also for making good attitude and developing
skill. If home schooling involves the government regulations, certainly all of
national education goals will be held because something regularly will be
easier to be succeed.
The author
said that Many people who feel that home schooling is detrimental believe the government
should impose more regulations on home schooling. I am as “many people” that is
said by the author. I think one of the importance of education is government
involvement both of home schooling and formal school. School will produce well
educated students.
I realize that home schooling has
advantages based on opinion of the author and researcher of home schooling, its
advantages is less than formal school. Besides less socialization above, home
schooling also making home schoolers feel difficult to cooperate each other.
They also does not have some opportunities to join with extracurricular such as
OSIS, basket ball team, cheerleader, etc. because they learn personally at
home. It seems the student isolated. For instance, there is no competition in
teaching learning process to increase student’s learning motivation. While
competition will be used in real life like in their work that will be faced in
their future.
Home
schooling does not teach how ways discipline are, how making time is effectively,
how getting many experiences with their counterparts. Formal school teaches all
of them. It is really school if the students should have to travel to and from
school, go class to class, fill out the attendance list, play with other
students when they have a break.
If we want to choose a way of learning in home schooling, why we cannot
choose some course or private learning to study some subject deeply. It is
nearly same. I conclude that Students of formal school will produce well
educated and socially involved citizens. The students can get education from
parents, family in their home and from teacher in school. Here, parents do not
need to pay attention fully, twenty-four hours a day, it spends time, getting
time outside to work is limited.
Everyone known Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Pierre Currie, Charles Dickens,
C. S. Lewis, Mark Twain, Daniel Webster, Ansel Adams, Andrew Carnegie, Sandra
Day O'Connor, Sally Ride, Albert Schweitzer and Christopher Paolini are
successful students of home schooling. We also must know that they are unlike
children or students in this era because the students in this era have a lot of
obstacles to learn. Sophisticated technology does the students laziness, for
example games, social media like Facebook, Twitter, etc make the students
wasting time all day long. It is less possible that their success can be
followed by students in this era.
I defy the author who is support home schooling. In my opinion formal
school is the greatest education. The parents who are not satisfied about
formal school, they expected to select high quality formal school well than
home schooling, so it will produce their children as well educated as the
parents expected.
I just try to learn developing ideas.
